Permissions
Home improvements and extensions may require planning permission or building regulations approval. The rules are complicated, particularly if you live in a listed building or designated area (like a national park or conservation area). You will need to get advice and apply for this before the start of works.

Where you are excavating by or working on a wall or structure shared with another property, you may need to serve your adjoining neighbours with written notice before the work begins. A guidance booklet and notice template can be downloaded here.

Preparations
