Are carpenters & joiners different?

What’s the difference between a carpenter and joiner?

You need something constructed from wood and you want the right person for the job. But do you search for ‘carpenters’ or ‘joiners’?

In summary, a joiner makes the timber products that a carpenter then fixes on-site. So a joiner might be employed to make the doors, frames and windows for a new building. They specialise in making joints (hence the name ‘joiner’) and usually work from a workshop. These timber pieces would then be given to a carpenter who would assemble and fix them to the house.

In practice there is overlap between the two roles. However, it is worth asking about a tradesman’s specialism. A joiner may make beautiful units but a carpenter may do a better job in fitting them to your kitchen. Similarly, a carpenter may skillfully hang and balance your doors but a joiner may make superior replacements.

At Oliver Gibbs Carpentry and Joinery, we specialise in carpentry but are also joiners who do cabinet making – a fine form of joinery, crafting cabinets, furniture and shelves. Therefore, whatever carpentry job you have, our carpenters in Shrewsbury can help.
